Socks-in-progress Wednesday

(Just for this week - I'm not trying to start a theme - that would require me to be organised!)

I've signed up for the Tour de France Knit Along so I'm trying to knock these over before 7 July. In no particular order:

Monkey Socks - two socks on two circs, Fleece Artist Sea Wool in Woodland colourway.
Monkey progress

These really are a quick and fun knit which probably explains why every knitter under the sun seems to be making these at the moment. (Check out the Cookie's Sock Creations group on Flickr if you want to see a "small" selection). Who am I to stand apart from the crowd? The Sea Wool is lovely to work with and I'd definitely buy it again.

Gusset of second sock is almost complete. Just the foot and toe to go.

Bayerische Socks - click through to the photo on Flickr to see my notes.
Bayerische toe approach

My stamina is starting to flag on this so I've made some modifications to the foot to make it go quicker. I'll wait until after the Tour de France to make the second sock - don't let me forget!

Socks go to High Tea

About once a year, we assemble a small collection of girls and we go and play at being "ladies" by indulging in High Tea at The Windsor Hotel. This year we gave the occasion an excuse by labelling it a birthday celebration for both S and E.

S kindly flashed some leg for some photos of her birthday presented Ladies Useful Stockings.

Useful stockings modelled

[Despite my swearing that I would never make another pair of knee-highs, I'm now feeling sorely tempted to make Millicent for myself.]

And I knocked up a quick 4 corners dishcloth / facewasher to go with the nice smelly stuff that I got E for her birthday.

I think this pattern probably looks better in a more variegated yarn. Perhaps the Pinwheel pattern would be a better choice for this cotton.

Happy Birthday Sea Breeze

In truth, I finished these stockings ages ago, but since they were a birthday present for S whose birthday has only just come around, I had put off photographing them with the thought that there was plenty of time. I meant to do a little photography with them last Sunday, when I actually had some natural light. Alas I realised I had forgotten as it got to 5pm and the light was all but gone already (tomorrow is the shortest day of the year here).
So anyway, I took these shots with the flash last night. The colour in them is actually a reasonable approximation of the red, but I really do prefer to take my photos in natural light.
We're scheduled to have High Tea this weekend. Perhaps I can prevail on S to wear them and we can do some "location" shots.

The Catch Up

I've signed up for the Harry Potter Sock Club over at Sunshine Yarns. I don't really need anymore sock yarn, but I figured "what the heck".

I'm tempted to join Donni on the Tour de France KAL. I'm thinking perhaps of channelling Robbie McEwen and putting myself in the Green Jersey category with an attempt at knocking out a pair of Baudelaires in the space of 3 weeks (not impossible, but I'd definitely need to put all other projects on the back burner).

WIP report:
  • Bayerische sock one is still going..... very..... very.... very.... slowly. I'm finding it quite tiring to work on so I generally only manage 3 or 4 rounds per day.
  • I'm working on a pair of Monkey socks (both at once on 2 circs) which is progressing pretty quickly down the legs. I'm knitting this in the Fleece Artist Sea Wool which is quite lovely to work with.
  • The second sock of T2's second pair is working it's way steadily towards the heel flap.
  • I started work on a quick patchwork piece with the Kaffe Fassett charm square packs that I bought at the quilt convention earlier this year. There's an afternoon's worth of work left to sew up the blocks, then I'll have to decide how it is to be quilted.
  • I'm itching to try out Nona's Sidewinders pattern at some stage in the near future. (See my Sock Queue in the side bar for the link).
  • Is there a companion syndrome to SABLE* called PABLE?

Good reasons to go to the movies

"Brad Pitt looks so hot when he eats"

Perhaps I should explain. We were discussing what movies were showing and what we might go and see over the coming weekend. Our paralegal was debating whether to go and see Ocean's 13. I remarked that I'd be pretty happy to watch anything with George Clooney in it and then she came out with the remark above.

Chacun à son goût.

Dog on a quilt

I love seeing my quilts in use and being loved.
I visited Aunty M over the weekend and got to see the quilt that I had made her in situ. It's spot is draped over the back of one of the leather recliners. Ruff, however, has discovered that if he scrabbles about a bit, the quilt slips down around him and is a really good place to snuggle down.

7 Random Facts

I got tagged by Princess Genevieve

1. Random is tricky because my mind will do these weird word association links between things.

2. I've just cast on a pair of Monkey socks (both at once on 2 circs) - I am weak and cannot resist the urge to add to the WIP pile.

3. I've worn the same pair of glasses for work for the last ten years - I hope they don't look too dated.

4. I've just received two copies of this year's White Pages as my unit is on a corner and they put one set by my letterbox and one set by my driveway around the corner.

5. The foot section of my first Bayerische sock seems to be taking much longer than the leg even though the sole is just plain knitting.

6. I have been planning to buy a new computer in 18 months' time for the last 18 months. Maybe in 2009?

7. I was nearly named Cleo (after Cleo Laine), but was instead named after another singer who was in town at the time. No-one has ever heard of her since (even my Mum can't remember the name of the group she sang with).

I choose not to tag.

Womble on the road

Self at the Big Pineapple, originally uploaded by Paisley Womble.

It's an informal condition where I work that whenever you go on holiday, you must send a postcard back to the office. We thought it would be fun to get one from the Big Pineapple which is about half an hour up the road from where I'm staying.
So off we went, only to discover that Big Pineapple postcards must be a best-seller, and they were out of stock.
So we snapped this shot as proof I was there and got a postcard of the Glasshouse Mountains to send instead.
It's raining and overcast today, hence the darkness of the photo, but otherwise the weather has been sunny and fine.
